Actress Audree Norton has died, a co-founder of the U.S. National Theater of the Deaf and the first deaf actress to appear in a U.S. television drama, an episode of “Mannix” above in 1968, as well as other series of the period. In 1979 she and her husband Kenneth Norton, also a deaf actor, were cast in an “afterschool special” about a hearing child raised by deaf parents, but their casting was vetoed by the director who insisted on hearing actors instead. When she publicly criticized the director and filed a grievance with the actors’ union, she never worked in television again – but through the National Theater she paved the way for other hearing-impaired actors. Ten years after she lost that public fight over discrimination, deaf actors were cast in deaf parts 78% of the time, vs. 33% a decade earlier. (CBS-TV)

“So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known. What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops. Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny?
